Don't get taken when selling your timber. Learn the ins and outs of how to do it at "Selling Timber? Consider This" 6:30-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Medina County office of Ohio State University Extension, Professional Building, 120 W. Washington St., Medina.

Sponsored by OSU Extension¹s Ohio Woodland Stewards Program, the workshop looks at a landowner¹s selling options, tax implications, sources for additional advice and information, and how to make sure a timber sale protects the long-term health of your woods.

"So much timber is sold when someone knocks on a landowner¹s door and offers an amount of money for Œtheir timber," says Kathy Smith, who will lead the workshop and is coordinator of the Stewards program. "It could be a great deal, or it could be a horrible deal. How does a landowner know unless they know what they have to sell and understand how it¹s being sold?"

Most landowners will have one or two timber sales in their lifetime, Smith says.

"A properly implemented harvest will leave a woods that still meets the landowner¹s goals and objectives," she says, "While an improper harvest can leave a woods that takes years to regenerate back, if ever, to a woods that meets your goals and objectives."
