Chobani Responds On The GMO-Free Milk Controversy

Yogurt manufacturer responses to Farm Progress' query on how they're dealing with GMO-Inside's push to stop using milk from cows fed GMO feedstuffs.

Published on: Jul 22, 2013

Lindsey Kos, Chobani communications manager, offered this response regarding the GMO Inside campaign:

Over the past few months, we've watched an increase in chatter surrounding GMOs. And, while challenging, it's excited us to field questions and concerns directly related to our products. It means people are reading labels and paying close attention to ingredients – the first step in making the right choices for their families.

The Chobani story began with the mission to make a better cup of yogurt – Greek yogurt. When we witnessed the incredible response, we knew we were onto something much bigger.

We truly believe we can revolutionize the food industry. But, Rome wasn't built in a day.

It wasn't easy in the beginning. We spent 18 months crafting the perfect recipe. We insisted that we use milk from cows not treated with rBST.

And it isn't easy today. Our yogurt master, Mustafa, eats more than four pounds of yogurt each day, testing and re-testing to ensure every cup meets our standards of excellence. It's a good thing we don't like easy.

Our team is dedicated to addressing GMOs and is currently navigating its complexities, specific to dairy. As it stands now, we do not claim to be GMO-free.

According to some, doing so would require us to ensure the feed to more than 78,000 cows across more than 875 farms is 100% GMO-free. It requires teamwork among our employees, farmers and industry partners.

Like you, we want to be a leader on an issue that's important to our consumers. We promise to take great care in exploring all options, without compromise to our mission or core values. Thank you for continued support, and please stay tuned.
