Each November Ron Behm, of Burlington, N.D., relives a bull attack that almost killed him as he was herding cows home from summer pasture.

Just before passing through the last gate on the 13- mile drive, a 2,400-pound horned Hereford bull charged the horse Behm was riding. The bull caught the horse behind its left shoulder and lifted it off the ground three times and pushed it more than 20 feet in a matter of seconds. Behm's leg was trapped between the horse and bull. His tibia and fibula broke and his knee shattered in four pieces.

Behm says the horse saved his life. The 12- year-old gelding was an experienced cow horse and somehow managed to stay on its feet.

"I remember thinking that if the horse went down, I was going die," Behm says.
