Reminding farmers that wheat is a strategic crop, Bayer CropScience officials have announced they have purchased two Ukranian wheat breeding companies to gain wheat lines bred for winter hardiness and drought tolerance.

The purchase of SORT and EUROSORT, based in Mironivka, close to Kiev, will enhance Bayer's global wheat breeding efforts, says Hartmut van Lengerich, head of Crop Strategy Cereals, Oilseeds & Sugar Beet at Bayer CropScience in Monheim, Germany.

"Our objective is to become the partner of choice to wheat growers and the wheat industry and to offer superior integrated solutions to improve sustainable cereal production," he explained. "Our first in class varieties will complement our already leading portfolio of crop protection, seed treatment and service solutions, allowing us to serve wheat growers from seed to harvest," he added.

Financial terms of the agreement were not released.
