Apply to Serve on Nebraska Wheat Board

Gov. Heineman will appoint two members after June 1 deadline.

Two positions on the Nebraska Wheat Board are open for appointment by Gov. Dave Heineman. The terms for Nebraska Wheat Board members representing Districts 5 and 7 will expire next month. Those interested in serving on the board need to apply by June 1.

District 5 represents Buffalo, Custer, Dawson, Franklin, Furnas, Gosper, Harlan, Kearney, Phelps and Red Willow counties. Von Johnson of Cambridge, the current District 5 director, has indicated he will pursue reappointment.

District 7 is the at-large board seat and represents the entire state. Brent Robertson of Elsie, the current District 7 director, has indicated he will seek reappointment.

Any wheat producer interested in applying needs to submit an application to the Governor's office for consideration. Wheat growers to qualify as candidates must be citizens of Nebraska, at least 21 years of age, have been actively engaged in growing wheat in Nebraska for at least five years, reside in a county in their respective district and derive a substantial portion of income from producing wheat.

Seven wheat producers comprise the Nebraska Wheat Board and serve five-year terms.

The Nebraska Wheat Board administers the one and one-quarter-cent per bushel checkoff assessed on wheat marketed in the state.
