Another Step Toward E15 Sales

EPA approves first applications for registration of ethanol to make E15.

The Environmental Protection Agency has approved the first applications for registration of ethanol to make E15. The agency says the registration of ethanol to make E15 is a significant step toward its production, sale and use in model year 2001 and newer gasoline-fueled cars and light trucks. The Renewable Fuels Association calls the approval of E15 as a registered fuel the most significant development in a three year effort to approve sale of the mid-level ethanol blend.

Growth Energy CEO Tom Buis says Monday's announcement strengthens the ethanol industry's efforts to innovate and continue to deliver domestically-produced and affordable alternatives to foreign oil. With ethanol selling cheaper than gasoline, and even higher gasoline prices on the horizon, Buis is encouraging all Americans to ask their local filling station how soon they'll see the more affordable E15.

"We've been working for a long time to make E15 a real choice for drivers, and we're happy to see this step forward," said National Corn Growers Association President Garry Niemeyer. "We hope that within a matter of months we can get this important blend into vehicles to help decrease our nation's reliance on foreign oil and help bring gas prices down."

Registration is a prerequisite to introducing E15 into the marketplace. But before the fuel can be sold - manufacturers must take additional measures to help ensure retail stations and other gasoline distributors understand and implement labeling rules and other E15-related requirements. According to RFA President and CEO Bob Dinneen we could see E15 at fuel stations in the Heartland of America as early as summer as states in the Midwest have begun to address their regulatory requirements. He says the future for consumers, ethanol producers and the country has just gotten a little brighter and a little stronger.

To enable widespread use of E15, the Obama Administration has set a goal to help fueling station owners install 10,000 blender pumps over the next 5 years. In addition, both through the Recovery Act and the 2008 Farm Bill, the U.S. Department of Energy and USDA have provided grants, loans and loan guarantees to spur American ingenuity on the next generation of biofuels.

    We have been using e10 for a long time e15 will have little effect on MPG. but what few talk about is what else is put in gasoline, like toxic petrochemicals, and that next to Russia we have the dirtiest fuels, ethanol is pure it helps clean the crud that most are proud owners of? The more ethanol the less toxic and dirty fuels is. Some whine about BTU, AT E30 it still is the same, lesson1 old cars 70'sto back used higher octane fuels and were built with higher compression, they finally removed tetra lethal lead because it was Toxic! but performance suffers greatly engine knock, detuning, and diesling was normal, then auto manufacturing. Was forced to build low compression engines and we lost the American muscle car and performance suffers THANKS EPA? WITH NO OCTANE REPLACEMENT THE KEPT BUILDING CARS FOR CRAP GAS! and then whenywe a high performance car we got 5%to ethanol they didn't use it as a natural octaneane builder they mixed worse fuel with it?. Then stupid people in GOV. DECIDED BEYOND HIGH AND LOW ALTITUDE BLENDS WE NEEDED 187and DIFFERENT BLENDS +WINTER AND SUMMER BLENDS, this made carburetors OBSOLETE! NOT ETHANOL, WE AS PERFORMANCE ENTHUSIASTS WOULD LOVE TO SEE ETHANOL ADDED OR BLENDED TO PRODUCE HIGHER OCTANE NOT JUST CHEAP CRAP LOW OCTANE EFFICIENCY AND PERFORMANCE GOES HAND IN HAND THE OEM's tune for crap gas unless you buy a high performance car requiring premium? This is only 96to octane, and e85 can be around 104 octane same as standard race fuel! But a family cruiser built to run on crap fuel can't take advantage of this great fuel as it has low compression so it wastes the fuel just as it would normal old school race fuel, answer >OEM's step it up! And to the ethanol industry good luck getting pumps everywhere to support this, over half the stations are reluctant to open up ground because the EPA steps in to fine them for old contamination instead of working for a better tomorrow they road block jobs and development, just as they have used a skewed emmision testing method the hurts ethanol and benefits oil? We need a communicator to work with India owned stations they have no clue?

    I use E-85.My gas milage drops about 5%,but the price is 60 cents cheaper than gas.The oil Companies could price E-85 a dollar cheaper,That what it is on the futures.But I buy it because it is a USA product.the amount of jobs and econimic activty create by this is not reflected at the pump.

    All preliminary reports are that E15 should be a good option. the major question is how it will affect your gas mileage. From person experience, I feel that using the current 10% blend that my miles per gallon is 10% less than using regular gas. Therefore the price should be 10% cheaper than regular gas, otherewise it is not economical to use. The same for E15, the price has to based on the mileage difference between regular gas and E15. If you get 15% less mileage then the price has to be 15% cheaper than regular gas. At this time the "oil companies" are not taking this into consideration, therefore I am reluctant to use it.

    E-15 Good for USA.With a record corn crop next year and a dollar a gallon cheaper ethonal.I hope all the people in the USA use this.I don't want to see anymore US soldier get hurt in the Middle east for oil.Take money away from the Middle East then they can't afford a bomb.
