Agribusiness Companies Help Dairy Producers Support AFHK

Action for Healthy Kids aims to improve childhood nutrition and physical activity in schools.

An increasing number of dairy and other agribusiness companies are joining America's dairy producers in supporting Action for Healthy Kids, which aims to improve childhood nutrition and physical activity in our nation's 95,000-plus schools. Dairy producers, through their checkoff investment in National Dairy Council, the nutrition research and education arm of the producer-funded dairy checkoff, aim to introduce children to nutritious foods, including dairy, and better physical fitness in schools.

AFHK is the only national, grassroots nonprofit organization addressing the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes in schools. AFHK has an extensive volunteer network – with teams in all 50 states and the District of Columbia – comprised of thousands of educators, administrators, health professionals, community leaders, parents, and students. These teams address critical issues in local schools, such as the development of school district wellness policies and healthy vending. Local dairy council staffs serve on all 51 state teams.

"Dairy producers and their partnering agribusiness companies know that what's good for kids and kids' nutrition is also good for dairy," says Paul Rovey, an Arizona dairy producer and chairman, Dairy Management Inc., which manages the national dairy checkoff. "By supporting AFHK, we can help create lifelong dairy consumers and help America's youth reach their full potential."

As part of this nationwide initiative, dairy is at the table with experts in business, sports, education, and children's health. The public partnership includes more than 50 national organizations and government agencies such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National School Boards Association, USDA, and others.
