The Sustainable Agriculture Coalition's new 2007 Farm Bill platform is drawing support from agricultural and environmental groups, including recent backers American Farmland Trust and the Nebraska Wildlife Federation.

The SAC report titled "No Time for Delay: A Sustainable Agriculture Agenda for the 2007 Farm Bill" calls for new farm policies to better agriculture, the environment and rural development. AFT President Ralph Grossi calls it a step towards "a new farm policy that benefits everyone."

Some of the positive changes Grossi hopes to see include "improved safety net programs, expanded conservation, support for farmers and ranchers left out of past farm bills, increased access to healthier diets, and a greater emphasis on entrepreneurship, new markets and renewable fuels."

The SAC platform includes recommendations that meet some of Grossi's concerns, including a new initiative to help beginning farmers and ranchers get started, a new comprehensive Conservation Security Program, and an expanded Value-Added Producers Grant including more help for mid-sized farms.
