Three advocacy groups filed a petition Tuesday morning with the FDA calling for the withdrawal of approval for Monsanto's Posilac bovine somatotropin.

The groups - Cancer Prevention Coalition, Organic Consumers Association, and Family Farm Defenders - say the injection of Posilac into dairy cows results in increased risks of cancer in humans who consume that milk.

Twenty-seven nations have banned rBST milk, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found it safe and approved Posilac.

The petition requests the immediate suspension of approval of Posilac based on imminent hazard and requests the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration to label milk and other dairy products produced with the use of Posilac with a cancer risk warning.
