1. USDA projects farm income will continue its slide in 2016, but the good news is the slide shouldn’t be as steep as the two previous years when profits dropped from a record $123.3 billion in 2013. – Farm Futures

2. President Obama released his fiscal year 2017 budget on Feb. 9. The plan calls for $18 billion in cuts to crop insurance over 10 years, but increases funding for conservation and nutrition programs. – Farm Futures

3. Syngenta won a settlement in a Plant Variety Protection Act violation. The act does not allow protected seed to be sold, re-sold or used to produce seed without permission of the developer. – Farm Futures

4. The Renewable Fuel Standard requires gasoline companies to blend ethanol into gasoline. Groups hurt by high corn prices oppose it as do folks who oppose government intervention in the free market. But ethanol is cheaper than the alternatives. And what is high-priced corn? – NPR

5. Dr. Jack Shere was named the acting USDA chief veterinary officer and deputy administrator for Veterinary Services. He takes over for Dr. John Clifford, who is now the chief trade adviser for Veterinary Services National Import Export Services.  – Feedstuffs

6. Russia said it’s banning corn and soybean imports from the United States starting Feb. 15 because product from the United States failed to meet their standards. – Farm Futures

7. Greek farmers wielding shepherd’s staffs and throwing rocks clashed with riot police in Athens, Greece, Friday. They’re protesting the government’s plans to overhaul the pension system and raise taxes. – Yahoo News
