Named editor of the Nebraska Farmer in June 2003, Don has been with the state's primary source for ag news for more than 26 years.
A Nebraska native, he grew up on a diversified crops and livestock farm in northeast Nebraska. After a stint in the navy, Don studied journalism at the University of Nebraska, including a summer internship at the Norfolk Daily News in northeast Nebraska. After graduating in 1976, he joined the staff of the York News-Times, another Nebraska daily, as a general assignment reporter, covering agriculture, city and county courts, and sports.
Don joined the Nebraska Farmer in 1977 as associate editor, covering government agencies, the Nebraska legislature, crops, water law and natural resources. Don was part of a team project looking at Nebraska’s irrigation industry that earned the nationally prestigious Oscar in Agriculture Team Reporting Award, administered by the University of Illinois. In October 1988, he was named managing editor, continuing to write feature articles while editing copy and coordinating story assignments.
Don is a member of the American Agricultural Editors Association, the University of Nebraska Agronomy/Horticulture Department Advisory Board, the Nebraska Agricultural Leadership Council board of directors and the Nebraska Ag Relations Council.
"Simply put," Don says, "I do what I do because there is no better job than traveling my favorite state and interviewing the most important folks who reside in it - the farmers and ranchers who produce safe, abundant and quality food for U.S. consumers."
