Coalition Opposes Proposition B

Missouri agricultural and pet owners groups encourage voters to vote 'no' on HSUS-pushed ballot initiative.

Members of Missourians for Animal Care have voted unanimously to oppose the Humane Society of the United States and the proposition the Washington, D.C.,-based group is pushing in Missouri.

The initiative, titled Proposition B and slated to appear on the November ballot, targets family owned professional kennels already inspected and licensed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. If passed, the proposition will bankrupt legal, licensed breeders who comply with existing state and federal laws.

"HSUS is a multi-million-dollar fundraising organization that runs such misleading campaigns under the false guise of cute puppies and kittens," says Don Nikodim, chairman of Missourians for Animal Care. "They have no connection to our local shelters and unfortunately have no interest in solutions. In their own words, the ultimate goal of HSUS is to end animal agriculture. Bottom line -- Washington D.C. factory fundraisers shouldn't be telling Missourians how to run our businesses."

Missouri currently has stringent laws, regulations and reporting systems in place to prevent animal abuse. Proposition B adds to that litany of regulations, but does nothing to provide resources for enforcement.

Missourians for Animal Care is a coalition of mainstream agriculture and animal owner groups in the state. Formed to address the tactics of anti-ag activists, the group is working to shine a light on the deceptive practices and aims of HSUS, and to inform Missouri voters to vote no on Proposition B on Nov. 2.

Members of MOFAC include: Missouri Agribusiness Association (MO-AG), Missouri Cattlemen's Association, Missouri Corn Growers Association, Missouri Dairy Association, Missouri Egg Producers, Missouri Equine Council, Missouri Farm Bureau, Missouri Federation of Animal Owners, Missouri Livestock Marketing Association, Missouri Pet Breeders Association, Missouri Pork Association, Missouri Soybean Association, The Poultry Federation, Professional Pet Association, FCS Financial and MFA Incorporated.

Prop B is ABSOLUTELY about HSUS. They are funding this attack on Missouri! Missouri's dog problems are already being addressed by the state. With more funding, it would get done faster. Obviously, unlicensed, illegal breeders are shut down when discovered with current law. Missouri is handling the few licensed breeders who are not in compliance with the current regulations. There are rules in place to deal with problem breeders. Will it get done any faster with Prop B? Where will funding be coming from for more enforcement? Can Missouri afford it? The target of the HSUS with Proposition B is the legal, licensed breeders who are complying with current regulations. The intent is to make it cost prohibitive to legally raise dogs in this state. Most breeders will not be able to rebuild kennels to suit HSUS. The few who do will not survive long with the unfettered access to outside for mothers with pups and limits on property and income. PUPPIES WILL DIE from exposure to extreme weather. DOGS WILL DIE from being the 'one too many'. The agricultural community recognizes the threat from the HSUS with Proposition B. We can only hope that the votors will not buy the deceptive bill of goods (Prop B) that the HSUS is selling!

Prop B is not about the HSUS, it is about Missouri's dogs. A special report released earlier this week details some of the horrific conditions at twelve of the worst puppy mills in the state of Missouri – and every one of them is licensed by the state and/or USDA. These are only a few examples of the cruelty in Missouri puppy mills. The Dirty Dozen underscores the need for Proposition B in Missouri to establish common sense standards for the care of dogs.
