As an editor I'm on a lot of e-mail lists for everyone from USDA (very helpful) to PR firms for plenty of companies (helpful too), and the mood appears to be pretty good in the market. Just coming off the 2008 Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa where a little rain didn't dampen the spirits of those who attended, it's good to see that some optimism remains.   Henry Kirn, a machinery analyst for the investment firm UBS, issues regular statements regarding the ag market and how it relates to the…

    New at Boone!

    Farmer Iron

I'm sitting in a trailer at the new Farm Progress Show site just east of Boone, Iowa. It's early - just after 6 a.m. - and I can hear the occassional back-up beep of a wheel loader, or some other piece of equipment as the final touches are put on the new show site. I'm pretty lucky, I think. Part of my job allows me to attend Farm Progress Show and Husker Harvest Days (our two shows) as part of the normal workday routine for an editor. Of course, neither show is routine. This year we didn't have a lot of media events in advance of the show talking about new equipment, but judging from the way my e-mail in-box filled up this week, there's going to be plenty to see. Farmer Iron deals with the equipment issues of the day, and I expect plenty. Got a note…

    Ramping up for 'Fieldwork'

    Farmer Iron

     on August 14, 2008

It's that time of year again - summer flies by so fast. For wheat producers harvest is mainly over and combines will be rolling again for grains and oilseeds. We mark our years by the machines in the field.   We're getting excited here at Farm Progress for our two big farm shows - Farm Progress Show in its new Boone, Iowa home, and Husker Harvest Days, in Grand Island for its 31st year. We mark our calendars by the start of these big shows almost like farmers.   For our show team this time…
