Residual Herbicides Important to Help Reduce Weed Resistance Risk

By Rick Cole
Monsanto Weed Management Technical Lead

Southern farmers who have battled resistant pigweed know the importance of taking a proactive approach to weed management. Many are achieving effective weed control in cotton and soybeans by participating in Monsanto’s Roundup Ready PLUS™ Weed Management Solutions.

The Roundup Ready PLUS platform provides best management practices developed in cooperation with leading academics, agronomists and other industry partners. It also provides financial incentives to help offset the cost of using qualifying residual herbicides offered by Monsanto and industry partners.

Using residual herbicides in combination with Roundup® agricultural herbicides provides multiple modes of action to help reduce the risk of resistant weeds developing. Research shows that soybean growers can realize a two- to three-bushel-per-acre greater yield when weed management programs include residual herbicides.

By following the Roundup Ready PLUS best practices, farmers can achieve effective, economical weed control in their Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans, without sacrificing higher yield potential by switching to LibertyLink® soybeans.

During the 2011 season, about 70,000 soybean, cotton and corn farmers throughout the U.S. participated in the Roundup Ready PLUS platform and received financial incentives totaling nearly $100 million.

New tools continue to be added to the Roundup Ready PLUS platform, including the addition of two post-emergence herbicides – Cobra® and Flexstar® – for use in soybeans this season. Monsanto’s new product pipeline includes the Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System, which is being developed to provide tolerance to both glyphosate and dicamba for greater flexibility, simplicity and crop safety in controlling tough weeds in soybeans and preserving yield, pending regulatory approval. For cotton, the Roundup Ready Xtend Crop System is also planned to offer tolerance to glufosinate.
