Farmers Can Achieve Effective Weed Control, Higher Yield Potential with Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® Soybean System
By Tony White
Monsanto Soybean Product Development Manager
Southern farmers concerned about weed resistance can achieve high yield potential and effective, economical weed control by adopting the Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybean system.
This approach includes farmers planting Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield technology and participating in Monsanto’s Roundup Ready PLUS™ Weed Management Solutions platform.
That platform offers best management practices developed with university academics for controlling tough weeds, and financial incentives to help growers offset the cost of qualifying residual herbicides.
Some Southern farmers may have considered switching to the LibertyLink® system, in hopes that a different mode of herbicide action will provide better control of glyphosate-resistant weeds. However, the Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean system offers several advantages over the LibertyLink system:
- Higher yield potential – Based on university trials across the South last season, Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans out yielded LibertyLink soybeans by more than 4.5 bushels per acre and had a yield advantage of more than 4.0 bushels per acre compared to Pioneer® and NK®.
- Broader weed control – Roundup® agricultural herbicides provide powerful, consistent control of a broad spectrum of weed species – around 200 weeds, compared with just 120 weeds controlled with the LibertyLink system.
- Timing flexibility – Farmers who plant Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield and apply Roundup PowerMAX® herbicide will have a 14-day pre-harvest interval for controlling late-season weed flushes to help protect yields, compared with a 70-day pre-harvest interval with the LibertyLink system.
The LibertyLink system is not a silver bullet for dealing with resistant weeds. By planting Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans and following the Roundup Ready PLUS weed management recommendations, including the use of residual herbicides, farmers can achieve effective, economical weed control and benefit from the higher yield potential that Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans offer.
