Residual Herbicides Important to Help Reduce Weed Resistance Risk

By Rick Cole
Monsanto Weed Management Technical Lead

You may not have weed resistance on your farm, but there is a chance it is near you and could spread to your farm. That’s why an increasing number of soybean farmers are taking a proactive approach to managing tough-to-control and glyphosate-resistant weeds.

Many are participating in Monsanto’s Roundup Ready PLUS™ Weed Management Solutions, which provides best management practices developed in cooperation with leading academics, agronomists and other industry partners. This platform also provides financial incentives to help offset the cost of using qualifying residual herbicides offered by Monsanto and industry partners.

Using residual herbicides in combination with Roundup® agricultural herbicides provides multiple modes of action to help reduce the risk of resistant weeds developing. Research shows that soybean growers can realize a two- to three-bushel-per-acre greater yield when weed management programs include the use of residual herbicides.

During the 2011 season, about 70,000 soybean, corn and cotton farmers throughout the U.S. participated in the Roundup Ready PLUS platform and received financial incentives totaling nearly $100 million.

New tools continue to be added to the Roundup Ready PLUS platform, including the addition of two post-emergence herbicides – Cobra® and Phoenix™ – for use in soybeans this season. Monsanto’s new product pipeline includes the Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System, which is being developed to provide tolerance to both glyphosate and dicamba for greater flexibility, simplicity and crop safety in controlling tough weeds in soybeans and preserving yield, pending regulatory approval.
