    It's official. Ohio hunters killed a record number of deer during the 2008-2009 hunting season. According to Ohio Department of Natural Resources figures released this week, 252,017 deer were killed. That exceeds the previous record of 237,316 deer set in '06-'07.  In '07-'08 hunters took Ohio 232,854 deer.     Is Ohio the Next Target for Animal Rights Extremists?

    Rumor has it that Ohio is the next target of the Humane Society of the United States for a voter referendum on animal rights. Reportedly the idea surfaced during a session on animal welfare at the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual meeting. Passage of Issue 2 in California has farmers and livestock groups on pins and needles.     It was Ag Day at the state capitol in Columbus Feb. 11.   Representatives of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation were gathered to deliver the organization's message on the state budget to their legislators. The group kept it simple. Restore funding for Ohio State University Extension and the Ohio agricultural Research and Development Center.     Power Show Must Go On

    Temperatures below frigid and a week of snow followed by ice followed by more snow did not slow down folks attending the Power Show at the Ohio Fairgrounds the first weekend of February.   Dennis Alford, show manager, describes attendance as "good, not record breaking but good."   Friday started slowly with very thin numbers, but the crowd increased as the sunshine came out on the weekend.
