What’s This Crazy Talk About Fresh, Local Food Being Expensive?

Los Angeles tells celebrity chef Jamie Oliver to hit the road.

Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot about how celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is disappointed in the Los Angeles school system for telling his “Food Revolution” show to hit the road.

If you’re not familiar with it, “Food Revolution” is the show where Oliver rides into town and rips apart the local school food program. I watched part of a show from his first season. I turned the channel when he started throwing perfectly good red meat in the dumpster, while prattling on about how we eat too much meat.

His typical MO is to revamp the entire food program so it only features fresh, locally-grown ingredients. As he plays up his buzzword-laden menu, everyone says how great the food is, blah, blah, blah.

Today, when I saw Fox News had a story on Mr. Oliver, I couldn’t resist checking it out. (www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/04/12/los-angeles-schools-bite-jamie-olivers-food-revolution/)

In the article, the Los Angeles Unified School District told its side of the story. Apparently, LAUSD got on the horn with the folks from season one and asked what the deal was. Guess what, the season one school district’s food program has been in the red ever since the visit from Mr. Oliver.

Shock! Fresh, local food is cost prohibitive to feed to the masses.

I guess Oliver figured if one state wouldn’t mind ballooning up their debt any further for the sake of health, it would be California. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he knocks on Chicago’s door next.

At the heart of this issue, I agree that kids should eat better. I just happen to think even more of a problem is their activity level.

In high school, every day I ate a roll of Hostess chocolate Donettes for breakfast (with whole milk) and a Big Bopper ice cream sandwich with my lunch. Believe it or not, I didn’t top 155 pounds until I went to college, where my activity level decreased significantly. Apparently an hour of weight training daily, football/baseball practice and gym class do wonders for burning excess calories.
