Soaring on Wings

My Generation

It's an eagle! Right outside the window!

Earlier this week, John ran in the house and told me to grab my camera: there was an eagle in the field just next to the house. I did and we all huddled at the window to watch. He was 150 yards away or so. Or maybe 50? Or maybe 250? I'm not so good with estimating distance. He was a ways out there. Far enough that my 200 mm zoom lens really didn't pick him up all that well.

Still, he was huge. We've seen more and more eagles around this part of western Illinois the past few years. They're still not common yet, so it's pretty exciting to see one. Sometimes we spot immature eagles, whose heads are not yet white. But this guy was definitely mature, with the white head and white tail feathers and massive yellow beak to prove it. Just amazing.

We watched him for a bit and then he flew off, massive wings spreading across the sky. When I got home from taking the kids to school, I could see him sitting in a tree back in the tree line. A little later, I walked into the office, and there he was – perched high in our front yard tree, right outside my office window.

So cool. He sat for a long time. Watching. Very alert. Very large. He made me think of that verse in Isaiah:

"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31

It was a good reminder on a day when we really just wanted to take a nap.
