Outfitting Your Tractor Cab

Farmer Iron

You have the farm monitors and the GPS guidance, but are you ready to hit the field?

Warning, what follows is a bit of a self-promotion piece for ways to enhance your smartphone before you're stuck in the cab planting for the next few weeks. While we know there are a growing number of apps out there - in our opinion there are some from Farm Progress that deserve your attention.

If you're going to be spending time running the planter, transporting seed to different fields, and all manner of tender and support work, put that smart phone you're carrying to work. Here's a quick rundown of some of the tools we have to offer that you can download today and be ready to roll right away. By the way, all these apps are free - a price I always like.

Growing Degree Days app - this is our geo-located smartphone tool that allows you to call up an area and see just how many growing degree days have accumulated. But we've expanded this application to include weather information and more. Check it out using the link above. We've developed this tool for the iPhone, Android and Blackberry platforms.

Farm Progress app - no matter what part of the country you're from, we have a farm magazine serving your area. You can download this app - for iPhone and Android - to keep up on local ag news, markets, weather and more. You can customize it for your region, or change regions to see what hot topics are impacting other parts of the country. Click the link to get to a page that can take you to either app - or search Farm Progress in the App Store (Apple) or the Android Market (Android)

Farm Futures app - this is our business magazine app that offers not only markets and news, but has commentary from Senior Editor Bryce Knorr, Market Analyst Arlan Suderman and Economist John Otte. In addition, the site plays video - like the weekly The Buzz show where Knorr and Suderman talk about key issues that impact grain prices.

That's just three apps, and downloading them into your smartphone will allow you to keep up on news, markets and weather without leaving the tractor cab. I know there are a lot of other ag-related apps coming out - I'm searching a few out and will test them and give you a rundown in the near future.

For now, happy planting and please be safe!
