Meet 'Your Kind of People'

It pays to getg out and pick other ag people's brains

Published on: August 6, 2009

I write this from the Dallas,Texas, airport after two days of meeting so many good people of agriculture from all over the world – 30 countries to be exact. All of us are communicators in agriculture.

At dinner last night, I talked with Swiss, Germans, French, Australians and, yes, even Americans. What’s most interesting is that while we come from different countries and lives, we share so many interests, likes and dislikes. The interests include a love for agriculture and family. The likes include the beauty of well-written words, great rural photos, and a deep affection for the people we work for – farmers. The dislikes: Over-regulation and costs thereof, and politics, politics and politics.

So why am I going on about this? Amidst the hubbub of being around people you don’t normally connect with, you open your mind to new opportunities – freshening your perspective on life, learning that why you may not have it as good as other people, you are luckier than many others.

You learn that new ways of bolstering farm productivity and profit are constantly evolving. And if your antennae are up, you can pick them up.

Agriculture is one of the most innovative industries in the world. Tuning into innovations is the difference between struggling to survive and achieving real success.

So grab hold of those opportunities to spend the day with your family scouting out those opportunities at events like Empire Farm Days at Seneca Falls, N.Y. and Ag Progress Days near State College, Pa.

Catch the details about what’s happening at the events in your August issue of American Agriculturist.
