Just Because They Haven't Come for Us, We Can't Be Complacent

The battle against the enemies of animal agriculture is everybody's fight.

Published on: June 29, 2009
I've heard a few words of disturbing complacency from Kansas producers in regard to the legislative battles our friends in other states are fighting with the Humane Society of the United States as it pushes its anti-agriculture agenda.

It's true that no initiatives have been introduced in Kansas. Yet.

But that doesn't mean Kansas has gotten by without damage from this movement or that we will be spared a statehouse or court battle down the road.

The movement to end horse slaughter, for example, has been costly to Kansas ranchers and Kansas horses alike. And any decrease in demand for beef, pork and poultry hits home in Kansas.

Ag producers and ag advocates alike need to keep our heads up and be ready to defend our livelihood. HSUS does not hesitate to mislead the public and outright lie about its mission and activities. Make no mistake. These people want to destroy animal agriculture. And they wouldn't mind seeing biotechnology go with it.

So keep watching and listening for media reports that indicate a reporter has been duped by these fanatics into believing that they are all about rescuing innocent kittens and puppies. Don't hesitate to call your local newspaper, television or radio station and tell them these people do not operate shelters, rescue pets or provide help to pet owners.

In reality, they lobby governments and write press releases. And they work tirelessly to destroy agriculture. Make sure everybody you know understands that.

And by the way "horse advocate' the disease commonly alled mad cow disease is bovine spongiform encephalopathy, not encephatilis. Might want to read up a little. Who knows what else you missed?

griekspook: see that you moved Tomki's comments up a notch.  This is what you pro-slaughter types just love to do....lie, mislead and cheat......Too bad so many of you have no respect for laws and orders in this country.  Can't wait to see all of you when the Europeans find out American horsemeat is tainted.

  5. TomKi says:

Valerie, that's dissembling.  You can say that such and such doesn't mean that the HSUS is out to destroy agriculture, but the HSUS announced several times that it intends to put an end to animal agriculture.  Why try to paint over what is common knowledge from Wayne Pacelle's own mouth?  Oh yes, it's because you want to deceive someone.

  6. p. griekspoor says:

The Europeans don't REFUSE to eat American beef. Their governments REFUSE to import it. And it has absolutely nothing to do with BSE. If they were worried about BSE they sure as heck wouldn't eat theiir OWN beef or buy anything from Canada. Where did BSE originate? That would be England. Which country had the most recent, massive outbreak of FMD? That would be England.

The issue is growth hormones, which is all about growth of imports, not growth of cattle, but that is another story.

Horse meat, by the way, is a delicacy in Canada as welll as in EU. Americans have a Wild West love affair with the horse. Our ancestors didn't hestiate to eat what they had to shoot because of a broken leg. And their descendants don't either.

  10. p. griekspoor says:

The French are worried about U.S. beef contaminating their country? I am trying not to laugh. The epidemic in France has been estimated as high as 300,000 cows infected with BSE. The U.S. has found three (that's three with NO zeroes) and two of those were imported from Canada. And that makes the French scared they will "get" BSE from the U.S. Logic is out the window here.

  11. horse advocate says:

griekspook: Forgot to mention Creutzfeld-Jacob disease symptoms: memory loss (dementia), personality changes, myoclonic jerks, aggressive behavior, coma, seizures and death.  The French don't want BSE, also know asn variant Creutzfeld-Jacob disease, in their country. Get over it.

  12. horse advocate says:

griekspook: The French don't want BSE (variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disase) in their country. You may wish to think that the French government refuse to import American beef because of the "hormones" but it just ain't so.  Do you remember when contaminated growth hormone was given to a kid and the kid got CJD?

"A person could possibly be infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) prions for over 50 years before developing variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), according to a study on another human prion disease called kuru in this week's issue of The Lancet. The findings suggest that the eventual size of a vCJD epidemic could be much bigger than previously thought, state the authors.

Dietary exposure of the UK population to BSE prions has been widespread. So far, around 160 vCJD patients have been identified in the UK, with cases also reported in France, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Canada, Japan, and the USA. Predictions of the eventual size of a vCJD epidemic have varied widely; recent estimates, based on the current numbers of VCJD patients, have suggested that the total epidemic may be relatively small. However, the incubation period for BSE in people is key in predicting the true extent of an epidemic, and this has been unknown until now."

  13. horse advocate says:

To pro-slaughter.  This is the best you can do, right? Throw out nonsense about animal advocates.  Your LIES and misleading statements about horse slaughter are falling on deaf ears.  Keep it up and continue to show your colors.....they are burning brightly.

  14. horse advocate says:

griekspoor: The Europeans REFUSE to eat American beef.

  15. horse advocate says:

Griekspoor: What are you taling about?  By the USDA, 92% of the horses sent to slaughter are YOUNG and SOUND.  What other things did you miss?

  16. horse advocate says:

To G: Don't forget to write about prions and how they don't get degraded or inactivated by stomach pH.

  17. horse advocate says:

True. BSE is bovine spongiform encephalopathy.  Care to tell everyone about BSE and why the Europeans refuse to eat American beef?

  19. lvthatfarm says:

The writer has this right on the mark.  HSUS and animal rights groups are not harmless.  They are very much wanting an end to livestock production, even if they tell you otherwise with a smile.  The horse slaughter bill has caused more pain and suffering of horses than any single legislative action this country has ever taken.  We need a way to humanely and economically euthanize unwanted horses.  A reality check is needed by the american public.  HSUS is bad news.  HSUS is not for the animals, it is for the profit of those who run it.  THanks PJ for a great article!

  20. p. griekspoor says:

Horse slaughter is absolutely part of this.

We used to send horses to slaughter because they were old, injured or had some terminal problem that prevented them from being able to work

Slaughter sale provides some payment. The alternative -- shooting them -- or turning them out to die of natural causes, does not.

Now that we have "humanely" denied the slaughter option, we send horses out to "pasture' to suffer until they die and deprive owners of the payment they might  have gotten for no-longer-viable animals.

And by the way, the European appetite for horsemeat has NOTHING to do with BSE. They have been eating horsemeat for hundreds of years. Just check a couple of history textbooks.

  21. Valerie says:

Because HSUS investigates animal abuse and exposes animal cruelty practices which often times includes cruelty committed by the animal agriculture producers, it does not mean they are trying to destroy animal agriculture.
I've read articles from animal agriculture publications that state that no matter how just or valid the legislation to end any animal cruelty practices may be, the animal agriculture community is asked to fight against the legislation just to defend the agriculture community practices even when abuse and cruelty is exposed.  And that's truly sad.
HSUS has become the target of the animal agriculture industry although most all Americans want the abuse and cruelty practices to end, especially when it involves how their food is produced.
Instead of the agriculture industry fighting these issues, they should be focusing on promoting ways to clean up their act, and hoping that their fellow producers will do the same.
It's surprising as well, that the animal agriculture industry is promoting horse slaugher, even though horses are not food animals in America.
Again, just another fight against needed legislation that would prohibit the inhumane practice of horse slaughter; to an animal that we don't even eat.  The legislation to end horse slaughter is just what it claims to be, and includes no other animal.  We don't want these non-food animals slaughtered just so the animal agriculture industry can win a battle against HSUS.
So instead of declaring war on an organization that exposes the truth to the American public about the cruelty and abuse food animals suffer by certain animal agriculture food producers, just correct the problem so that food animals are not made to suffer from abuse and cruelty.
    And leave our horses alone.

  22. horse advocate says:

This article makes absolutely no sense.  Every sentence is a non-sequitur and represent nothing more than one person's opinion.  Pro-slaughter PR machine publishes outright LIES, misleading statements and they even prove themselves wrong on this issue.

Horse slaughter has nothing to do with any other slaughter industry.  The Europeans don't want to eat American beef because of the bovine spongiform encephalitis issue.  Americans think their beef is safe but the Europeans don't agree.  Unfortunately, the Europeans don't realize that horsemeat is unsafe because there is no oversight to make sure that horses given banned substances like phenylbutazone are removed from the slaughter pipeline.

  23. vicki says:

How is ending the slaughter of American horses for foreign diners going to decrease demand for beef, pork and poultry? I see you have fallen prey to pro slaughter propaganda. The ending of horse slaughter is exactly that. What you need to understand is that horses are not a food source in America. We are not vegans trying to bring down the livestock industry. We are equine welfare advocates that want to end horse slaughter. Period. Anything beyond that is an outright lie. There is no slippery slope except in the lies being propagated by slaughter proponents.
