Illinois Farm Families: More Mom Conversations

My Generation

The Illinois Farm Families program marches on, with Farm Moms hitting the red carpet in Chicago and Field Moms heading back to the farm.

By early Wednesday morning, I'll be packed up and headed north on a train to Chicago, with any luck whatsoever. The Illinois Farm Families folks are sending fellow Farm Mom Emily Webel and me to a reasonably glamorous event in Chicago. "Girls Night Out – Go Red for Women" is hosted by Sassy Moms in the City, and celebrates the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement. There are to be "fabulous Chicago personalities," a red carpet, hors d'oeuvres, a fashion show and more. And of course, our purpose in being there is to meet and mingle with some of these women, and hopefully make a connection that will lead to food and farm conversations.

I think it will be, indeed, fabulous, but the phrase out of my element comes to mind. As in, I think I should probably do something with my nails – maybe throw on a little polish – but say I have to help pull a calf between now and then? I don't think most of the women at this thing probably have to worry about scrubbing afterbirth out from under (what's left of) their fingernails. This is a weird slice of my life.

In addition to Emily and myself, two Field Moms, Amy Rossi and Amy Hansmann will also be there and it will be good to see them both again and spend some time together.

And then next month, March 10, the roles are reversed when the whole group of Field Moms heads out to the farm again. Last fall they visited the Martz and Drendel families and this time, they'll visit the hog operation of Chris Gould and family. Chris, if you'll remember, gave a wonderful description of a hog processing facility at our last meet-up, leading to some Field Mom blog epiphanies. Suffice to say, the visit to his operation is sure to be a good one.

And I wonder, do the Field Moms agonize over what to wear to the farm as much as I do over what to wear to the city? I'm gonna go with no, but I suppose anything is possible.
