Northern Beef Packers is about to open in Aberdeen, S.D. The plant will process 200 head of cattle per day when it opens and will have the capacity to process 1,500 head per day per shift.

Bel Brands USA, headquartered in Chicago, is going to start construction on a new cheese plant in Brooking, S.D., this summer. The factory will have the capacity to process the milk from 15,000 cows. Bel Brands, which has two other plants in the U.S., makes Laughing Cow and other gourmet snack cheeses.

Northstar Agri Industries is scheduled to open its new canola processing plant in Hallock, Minn., this summer. The plant will take in a lot of canola from North Dakota and Minnesoa.

David Skaggs, South Dakota Department of Agriculture’s dairy development specialist, says the new cheese plant will be a “shot in the arm” for all of agriculture. Not only will it likely result in more dairies being built or expanded in South Dakota and the I-29 corridor, but it will also increase markets grain and forage producers, heifer growers and feedlot operators.

The same can be said for Northern Beef Packers and Northstar Agri Industries.
