This past weekend, the buzz around Iowa or I should say that smell around town was bacon. The 6th Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival kicked off this weekend in Des Moines, which has now become the largest bacon showcase in the world. Other events scheduled included lectures about bacon and an eating competition. The festival was preceded earlier in the week with a bacon queen pageant and a pig pardon by Gov. Terry Branstad.

The annual event, which sold out 8,000 tickets in less than four minutes – featured over 10,000 pounds of bacon all served in unusual ways. Chocolate –dipped bacon, bacon cookies, bacon cupcakes and even bacon gelato were on the menu.

Fans dressed in Viking hats, makeshift snouts and even a bacon weaved skirt.

The annual coronation for Bacon Queen  showcased a Q&A from the event coordinators and a brief talent competition. The winner was announced, and my good friend Kim Pfannebecker walked home as the 2013 Blue Ribbon Bacon Queen. Her talent? A bacon rap – like none other. One of her many prizes? A handmade bacon dress.

Congratulations, Kim! May all your bacon dreams come true!
