I can hardly believe it's been three years since this night.
It feels much more recent. Maybe it's because we are, yet again, in another crazy weather year on the farm. Or maybe because that night was scary enough to have engrained its traumatic self in my memory. Yikes.
Either way, the good news is that monitoring the farm's grain dryer has gotten a lot easier. Somewhere after writing the post about my husband's grain monitoring incident, GSI contacted us about their WatchDog system. We installed it last year.
We loved it.
And this year? We've upgraded to an iPad and this is what monitoring the grain dryer in the middle of the night looks like. No getting in the pickup and driving three miles up the road to the grain setup. Now, it's little more than rolling over, taking a look at the iPad and going back to sleep. Rock on.
And let me tell you, this farmer's wife is sleeping a whole lot better, too.
We even check it from my phone, sometimes just for the fun of it. Our nephew even checks it from his Chicago dorm room, which is, really, pretty darn cool.
This week is National Farm Safety Week. In the combine, in the bin, on the road or even in the middle of the night, let's all be safe. Sometimes, all it takes to be a little more safe is a little more sleep. Let's make that happen, too. After all, 2012 has been bad enough. Let's not add a farm accident to the tally.
