Buddy the bottle calf is lifting everyone’s spirits.

Remember that silver lining I mentioned in Monday’s sick cow debacle? Well, he has a name: Buddy. As expected, we lost the cow but John and our veterinarian were able to save the calf. He’s small but really cute; black with a perfect white blaze on his face. Jenna is smitten with her new bottle calf.

It was cold Monday night, and Buddy spent the night and part of Tuesday in the garage, wrapped in a blanket and parked below the radiant heat, lying on some leftover foam insulation from our remodeling project.

Buddy was a little slow to take to the bottle the first 24 hours, but he’s doing better. We got some colostrum from our dairy neighbors, Steve and Phyllis Hess, and that should give him a good start. Each of the kids took a turn with the bottle. Now it’s on to the powdered stuff, which I gotta say, I think it just stinks. Like, really smells bad. But it must just be me, because Buddy sucks it right down.

Kudos to the Tri-County Cattlemen, too, for giving out great door prizes at their banquet a couple weeks ago. I won a calf bottle, which has come in handy. Buddy says thanks, too.
