My girl turns 10 tomorrow. That's double digits. That's virtually impossible, except that it's very possible and it's gonna happen. Yikes.
It just so happens that I have to go to New York City this week for a meeting. And before you go thinking that I must have some glamorous fancy job here at Prairie Farmer world headquarters, let me assure you, my travels are far more likely to take me to exciting destinations like warehouses, corn fields and hog houses. NYC is definitely a first for me!
So with that little trip-birthday coincidence in mind, we decided to give Jenna a 10th birthday gift she'll always remember: she's coming with me to New York, and so is Grandma Sharon. My mother-in-law has never been to NYC either. This is big. We're really kinda very a lot excited. As in, Jenna started packing last week.
Indeed, she unwrapped her gift at her birthday party last weekend. Inside her very own wheelie carry-on lime-green suitcase was a set of cards announcing our trip and our destinations, including but not limited to the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the 9/11 Memorial and Annie. On Broadway. The photos here give you a taste of her confusion and ensuing excitement.
Jenna: "I don't get it…"
Me: "You're going to New York!"
Jenna: "I don't understand…!"
Hannah, her cousin: "You're going to New York City and you're going shopping with Grandma and you're gonna see Annie on Broadway!!"
Jenna: "ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!"
Oh yes, we're serious! The Spangler women are leaving the farm. Because sometimes, you've gotta get away and see the bright lights, in order to appreciate the quiet a little more.
New York may never be the same.
***Look for multiple posts tomorrow, including Day 15 of this series. I'll also be live blogging each of the panels at The Food Dialogues, a day-long event designed to spur farm and city conversation.
